The California Energy Commission (CEC) has approved new efficiency standards for replacement tires sold for passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or less. The regulation still requires review and approval by the Office of Administrative Law before taking effect.
Existing tires do not need to be replaced because of the regulation. Beginning with eligible tires manufactured on or after January 1, 2029, replacement tires will be required to meet rolling-resistance standards intended to improve vehicle fuel efficiency. Stricter standards will take effect for tires manufactured beginning in 2033.
Heavy-duty trucks over 10,000 pounds GVWR are excluded, along with certain off-road, high-load, and low-speed tires. For agricultural operations, the rule could affect replacement tires purchased for pickups and other light-duty vehicles. While the new requirements could increase tire manufacturing costs and potentially retail prices, the actual cost impact is not yet known.
