Global Lemon Sector Update

According to a recent report by Argentina’s Federation of Citrus Producers, the global lemon sector in 2026 is characterized by tighter supplies and firm market conditions, driven by lower production in the EU and Turkey, ongoing weather-related challenges, and strong international demand. Global production is projected to decline while Southern Hemisphere suppliers are positioned to capture additional export opportunities.

Argentina

Argentina’s National Service of Agri-Food Health and Quality (SENASA) has reported that approximately 27,000 MT of fresh lemons have already been certified for key destinations, including the EU, U.S., UK, Canada, and Russia. Argentina continues to benefit from strong global demand for both fresh and processed lemon products.

Looking ahead, lower Northern Hemisphere production, phytosanitary pressures, and shifting trade flows are expected to support continued demand for Southern Hemisphere supplies, particularly from Argentina and Chile, while keeping global lemon markets relatively tight through 2026.

Mexico

Mexico remains the world’s largest lemon and lime producer, maintaining its dominant role in the North American market despite ongoing challenges related to drought, high temperatures, and rising production costs.

European Union (EU)

EU lemon production is expected to decline for a second consecutive season, reducing domestic supply and increasing reliance on imports. Spain, the region’s leading producer, has benefited from strong prices and favorable export conditions amid lower competition from Turkey.

At the same time, Spain’s lemon and grapefruit association (AILIMPO) reported growing concern over the spread of Citrus Yellow Vein Chlorosis Virus (CYVCV) in Murcia, warning that the disease could pose a significant threat to future lemon production if not contained.

Chile

The Chilean Citrus Committee project total citrus exports will reach 530,000 metric tons (MT) in 2026, a 6% increase from the 499,204 MT exported in 2025. Lemons are expected to post the strongest growth, with exports forecast at 131,000 MT, up 14% from 2025 volumes.
