Argentina’s Federation of Citrus Producers (FEDERCITRUS) reports that Argentina and Japan have agreed to update the phytosanitary protocol governing fresh Argentine citrus exports, a move aimed at improving market access and export efficiency.
Under the revised agreement, Japan will shift from permanent on-site monitoring of quarantine treatments to periodic audits conducted by Japanese plant quarantine officials. Japan will also adjust its internal regulations to support this audit-based system.
According to FEDERCITRUS, the change is expected to streamline inspection procedures, reduce operational and logistical costs for exporters, and maintain the strict plant health standards required by the Japanese market. As part of the updated process, Argentina must notify Japan at least one month before the start of each export season. Japanese authorities will then decide whether an in-country audit is needed at the beginning or during the season, or if an on-site visit is not required.
