The Citrus Committee of Frutas de Chile recently reported that Chilean-origin oranges have been granted market access to Mexico and will enter the country duty-free. While Chile is nearing the end of its orange season, it intends to ship a symbolic ten containers in the first half of October. The newly opened Mexican market is expected to help Chilean orange growers diversify their key export markets, which are currently heavily focused on the U.S. market.
Notably, in 2024, the U.S. was the sole orange exporter active in the Mexican market, exporting approximately 26,250 metric tons of oranges worth $22.4 million. Given Chile’s countercyclical growing season, however, it is unclear if this new market for Chilean oranges will impact U.S. export volume.
