South African citrus exports to Russia have reached 5.1 million 15 kg boxes shipped by early September 2025, compared to 2.6 million boxes during the same period in 2024, a 96% year-on-year increase, according to a recent report by Argentina’s Federation of Citrus Producers.
September and October, typically peak export months, are expected to push the season’s final volumes and values higher. In 2024, South Africa’s citrus exports to Russia reached a record $150 million, with 2025 projected to surpass this figure significantly.
Historical data shows a steady long-term growth trend in citrus exports to Russia, despite downturns in 2016 and during COVID-19 disruptions. Export values rose from $73 million in 2016 to consecutive increases in recent years: $126 million in 2020, $129 million in 2021, $138 million in 2022, and $146 million in 2023.
The port of St. Petersburg has served as a consistent entry point for South African citrus for over 15 years, and simpler phytosanitary protocols regarding citrus black spot have eased market access and supported export growth.
Industry analysts suggest that, with tariff changes in the U.S., Russia could serve as an increasingly important alternative export destination for South African citrus.
