Earlier this week, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) announced that the Oriental fruit fly quarantine in Orange County had been lifted. According to CDFA, an infested area designation shall be removed if no additional life stages are detected by trapping or visual surveys for three life cycles after the last detection that triggered the quarantine. The average life cycle for one adult fruit fly is about 90 days, but it can vary due to the temperature. While this quarantine did not affect any commercial citrus, its proximity and ability to spread through various hosts remained a concern.
