Mexico Highlights Lemon Production and Exports

On September 11, Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) published a report emphasizing the country’s position as the second-largest producer and exporter of lemons and limes globally. The sector has experienced an annual growth rate of 8.4% and exported an average of 749,000 tons from 2019 to 2023. The primary export destinations by value were the U.S. ($659 million), the Netherlands ($10 million), and the United Kingdom ($3 million).

Michoacán was ranked as the main lemon-producing region, with 953,652 tons, followed by Veracruz with 867,916 tons, Colima with 312,047 tons, and Oaxaca with 300,310 tons. According to the report, 41.3% corresponds to sour lemon (Mexican, with seed), followed by Persian and, to a lesser extent, Italian lemon. The highest volumes are harvested from August to September.
