Navels
Today, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), in Cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), released its 2024/2025 California Navel Orange Objective Measurement Report. The initial estimate is 78.0 million cartons, up 2 percent from the previous year. The forecast includes Bloods and Cara Caras. Some highlights from the report include:
- Forecasted utilized production exceeds last year’s final production but is still below the 10-year average.
- Smallest diameter size in the last 20 years at the time of publishing. This could be because of the extreme heat spells over the summer.
- We utilized so much fruit last year because of the large size structure, whereas this year, it figures to be more balanced.
Mandarins
CDFA also released its 2024/2025 California Mandarin Objective Measurement Report. Some information to note from the report:
- Estimated increase of 8 million cartons from last year.
- The tree fruit set and diameter are both up.
- This is only the second full year of a production forecast.
- Bearing acreage is up 2,000 acres from the previous year.
