Update on South Africa-EU Citrus Import Requirements Dispute

According to recent media reporting, South Africa and the European Union (EU) are taking positive steps toward resolving their World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute over the EU’s citrus import requirements. The disagreement concerns phytosanitary control against citrus black spot (CBS) and false coddling moth (FCM) for EU citrus imports from South Africa.

South Africa requested World Trade Organization (WTO) consultations with the EU in April before requesting the establishment of two dispute resolution panels in June. The panels were established in July.

The report indicates that while a resolution could still take over a year, recent developments with other countries, such as the U.S. and Argentina, siding with South Africa, have created more pressure to find a resolution.
