Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D) was inaugurated as the 71st Speaker of the California State Assembly on June 30, 2023. His rise comes after various attempts made earlier last year to seize the Speakership through caucusing his fellow Democrats and supporting new Assembly candidates through a donor network called ‘Govern For California’ after term-limits swept through the lower house.
This marks the end of the Rendon-era and his promise of decentralized leadership that empowered Committee Chairs and leaders to set policy agendas, however it has yet to be seen how this new Speaker chooses to lead and set priorities. Some recent changes include—Speaker Robert Rivas (D) who is the former Chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee has appointed newly elected Central Valley Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria (D) as the new Chair. He has also appointed Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D) to the post of speaker pro tempore and Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D).
