USDA Publishes Argentina Citrus Fruit Annual Report

On January 2, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) published the Citrus Annual Report on Argentina

Lemons/Limes: 

  • FAS forecasts that lemon acreage in marketing year (MY) 2022/23 will increase by 2.0% to 128,495 acres. FAS estimates that lemon production in MY 2021/22 increased by 5.6% to 1.9 million metric tons (MMT) from the previous year due to favorable weather. Over the past few years, tree removal and replanting have also contributed to increased efficiency and yields. However, FAS forecasts that production in MY 2022/23 will decrease by 6.8% to 1.77 MMT due to extended droughts stemming from the third La Niña year in a row.
  • Lemon exports in MY 2021/22 remained steady at 260,000 metric tons (MT). In MY 2022/23, FAS estimates that exports will decrease 9.6% to 235,000 MT due to reduced production.
  • The European Union (EU) is Argentina’s largest lemon export market, accounting for 45% of exports by volume, followed by the U.S. (21%), Russia (18%), and Canada (3%).

Oranges:

  • FAS forecasts that orange acreage in MY 2022/23 will decrease by 2.6% to 91,429 acres. There has been no significant investment in expanding orange production area in recent years.
  • FAS estimates that orange production in MY 2021/22 increased by 10.7% to 830,000 MT, however in MY 2022/23, orange production is expected to decrease by 3.6% to 800,000 MT due to unfavorable weather conditions related to the La Niña drought.
  • Orange exports for MY 2021/22 decreased by 25.9% to 63,000 MT from the previous year. FAS forecasts that orange exports in MY 2022/23 will continue to decrease, dropping by 4.8% to 60,000 MT due to lower production.
  • The EU is Argentina’s largest orange export market, accounting for 44% of exports by volume, followed by Paraguay (36%), Russia (8%), and Canada (3%).

Tangerines/Mandarins:

  • FAS forecasts that mandarin acreage in MY 2022/23 will decrease by 2.2% to 66,471 acres. There has been no significant investment in expanding mandarin production area in recent years.
  • FAS estimates that mandarin production in MY 2021/22 through 2022/23 will remain steady at 380,000 MT due to unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Mandarin exports for MY 2021/22 decreased by 34% to 33,000 MT. FAS forecasts that mandarin exports will recover in MY 2022/23, reaching 57,000 MT.
  • The Philippines is Argentina’s largest mandarin export market, accounting for 35% of exports by volume, followed by Russia (33%) and Indonesia (5%).
