Field Day at Lindcove August 21st

The Lindcove Research and Extension Center will host a Field Day on “Fruit Scarring by Thrips, Katydids and Earwigs in Mandarins and Oranges” August 21^st from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Various experiments and trials were conducted in May this year at the Lindcove Research and Extension Center.  PCAs and growers will have the opportunity to see the results of the experiments and look at the fruit scarring.   No pre-registration is required.  Continuing Education credits have been awarded for 2.5 hours of ‘other’.

8:00 – 8:30 a.m.	Registration Opens
8:30 – 9:00 a.m.	2019 Citrus thrips pesticide trial results – Dr. Beth Grafton-Cardwell, UCR and Lindcove The ability of PQZ, Exirel, Minecto Pro, and Delegate to minimize thrips scarring damage.
9:00 – 9:10 a.m.	Using data from PCAs and citrus growers to look for trends in insect damage of citrus groups that then leads to experimentation – Dr. Jay Rosenheim
9:10 – 9:40 a.m.	Citrus thrips and katydid scarring in mandarins versus oranges – Dr. Bodil Cass, UC Davis Some mandarin varieties are not readily damaged by katydids or thrips and so pesticide treatments may not be needed.
9:40 – 10:00 a.m.	Earwig fruit damage – Hanna Kahl, UC Davis Earwigs can damage young citrus fruit but the feeding damage varies between oranges and mandarins and can be mistaken for katydid damage.
10:00 – 11:00 a.m.	Rotate between 3 stations and examine fruit scarring damage in the various thrips, katydid and earwig experiments A. Pesticide trial results and thrips scarring B. Thrips scarring on mandarins versus oranges C. Earwig scarring on mandarins versus oranges
